A carton seal is only proven when it survives the journey the parcel actually takes. Durability testing is how you get from “this tape looks strong” to “this tape holds our cartons through our freight lane”. This guide covers the recognised test standards, the tests you can run yourself on real cartons, and how to read the result.

The recognised standards

  • ASTM D3330 measures the peel adhesion of a pressure-sensitive tape: the tape is applied to a standard surface and the force to peel it is recorded, reported as force per unit width. It is a lab measure of how hard the adhesive grips, useful for comparing plastic tapes.
  • ASTM D5570 is the water-resistance test for tapes and adhesives used as a box closure: how the seal holds after exposure to water. Relevant if your parcels see rain or humidity.
  • ASTM D4169 is the performance test for a whole shipping container: a defined distribution cycle of handling, stacking, vibration and drops, at a severity level matched to the shipping method.
  • ISTA procedures (for example 1-series for basic integrity, 3-series for a simulated parcel-carrier environment, and carrier-specific procedures) give standardised pre-shipment test sequences that a lab can run against your packed product.

Water activated tape does not fit the pressure-sensitive peel test cleanly, because it bonds into the board rather than sitting on a smooth surface. For paper tape, the meaningful test is the packed-carton test, not the bench peel.

The tests you can run in-house

You do not need a lab to get a reliable answer for your own cartons. Run these on 10 to 20 real, packed cartons at their heaviest realistic weight.

1. The pull (peel) test

Seal the carton, let it dry for an hour, then try to lift a corner of the tape and pull the flaps apart by hand.

  • Pass: the carton surface tears and fibres stay stuck to the tape. The bond is stronger than the board.
  • Fail: the tape peels off clean, or stretches and lets a flap lift. The bond is too weak, usually a water-level, pressure or grade problem. See how to use water activated tape and reinforced vs non-reinforced.

2. The drop test

Drop each carton from bench height (about 750 to 900 mm) onto a hard floor: once flat, once on a bottom edge, once on a bottom corner. This mimics a sortation drop.

  • Pass: seams stay shut, contents do not shift, no split at the corners.
  • Fail: a seam opens or the bottom bursts. Check the seal on the bottom face and the carton grade.

3. The stack (compression) test

Load a test carton with weight equal to the column that would sit on it in a trailer or cage (often several times the carton’s own weight), and leave it for 24 to 72 hours, ideally in a warm room.

  • Pass: the carton holds shape, the seal does not creep open.
  • Fail: the carton slumps or the seam works loose over time. This is usually board grade, not tape, but a weak seal shows here too.

4. The humidity and temperature check

If your freight sees humidity or heat, condition a few sealed cartons in those conditions (a hot vehicle, a humid store) for a day, then repeat the pull and drop tests. A fibre bond holds up well; a surface adhesive often loosens.

5. Consistency check

Across your 10 to 20 cartons, are the seals the same length, the same position and the same strength? Inconsistent seals point to a hand-taping process or a dispenser that needs setting up, not a tape fault.

How to build a simple test protocol

  1. Define the journey: parcel or pallet, domestic or export, number of handling points, longest transit time, worst temperature and humidity.
  2. Pick the variables: the tape grades and widths, and the dispenser, you are considering.
  3. Pack the test cartons with real product at the heaviest realistic weight, sealed to your intended pattern (usually an H-pattern top and bottom).
  4. Run the sequence: dry, pull test a sample, drop test a sample, stack test a sample for 24 to 72 hours, humidity-condition a sample and re-test.
  5. Record pass or fail against fibre tear, seam integrity and shape retention, plus pack time per carton and tape used per carton.
  6. Confirm in the field by inspecting a batch of real deliveries if you can.

What “proof of performance” means for a claim

If you need to stand behind a seal for a customer or a carrier damage claim, keep: the test protocol and results, the sealing specification (grade, width, pattern), and a dated photo of a correctly sealed carton. “We seal every carton to this standard, tested to this protocol” is a strong position.
