Packaging Products in Perth

Goods leaving Western Australia face some of the longest freight legs in the country: road and rail across the Nullarbor to the eastern states, or long hauls north to remote mining and resources sites. Packaging that is fine for a metro courier run can arrive damaged after that. This is what “secure in transit” means for a Perth operation, and how to build it into the packaging.

Key points

  • Long-haul freight loads a carton with sustained vibration and compression, not just single impacts.
  • The carton grade, the fill, edge protection, load containment and the seal all have to be specified for the journey.
  • Recycled-content board softens faster in humidity, so grade and moisture protection matter more on a long transit.
  • A fibre-bonding tape holds a seam through days of handling where surface tape can peel.

What a long-haul journey does to a carton

Over days on a truck or in a rail wagon, a carton is subject to constant low-level vibration, is stacked under a load the whole time, and passes through multiple depot transfers where it is re-stacked and sometimes dropped. Temperature and humidity cycle. The failure mode is rarely one big impact; it is gradual, as seams work loose, board softens and contents settle.

Building transit security in

1. Carton grade

Specify board to an edge crush (ECT) value matched to the packed weight and the stack height it will see, with margin for a long transit. Under-specified board is the most common cause of long-haul crush.

2. Fill the void

Empty space in a carton collapses under sustained stacking and lets contents move for days. Right-size the carton, and where fill is needed use paper void fill or honeycomb wrap, which hold shape under compression better than air.

3. Edge and corner protection

Board edge protectors on heavy or fragile cartons carry the stacking load down the corners and stop the carton being crushed from the top.

4. Load containment

Stretch film applied with enough wraps and tension holds a pallet together through vibration and re-handling. A poorly wrapped pallet loses shape at the first depot.

5. The seal

A long transit works every seam. Reinforced water activated tape bonds into the board and holds where a surface adhesive peels at a corner after a few days. Seal the bottom to the same standard as the top.

6. Moisture

Recycled-content board absorbs moisture and loses stiffness faster than virgin board. On a humid leg or a container, that accelerates crush. Keep board dry before packing, and add a moisture barrier for sensitive goods.

Frequently asked questions

What packaging keeps goods secure over long WA freight distances?
A carton grade rated for the packed weight and stack height with margin, void filled so contents cannot move, edge protection on heavy cartons, well-tensioned load containment, and a fibre-bonding seal on both faces.

Why do cartons fail on long-haul freight?
Usually gradual crush from sustained stacking on under-specified board, or contents moving in an under-filled carton, rather than a single impact.

Does tape choice matter for a long transit?
Yes. Reinforced water activated tape bonds into the board and holds through days of handling; surface tape can peel at a corner.

How does humidity affect a long freight leg?
Recycled board softens and loses stiffness in humidity, which speeds up crush. Keep board dry and add a barrier for sensitive goods.

Can you spec packaging for our freight lanes?
Yes. Tell us the route, the weight and the stack height and we will recommend the carton grade and protection.
