Sachet packaging, single-dose pouches and stick packs for powders, liquids, gels, creams and wipes, is one of the fastest-growing formats in food, health and personal care. Most brands launching a sachet product assume they need a sachet contract packer to fill it. Often they do. Sometimes buying ready-made sachets and filling in-house is cheaper and gives more control. This guide covers how to evaluate a sachet co-packer and how to work out whether you need one at all.
What a sachet contract packer does
A sachet or stick-pack co-packer runs form-fill-seal lines that:
- Form the sachet from roll stock (three-side seal, four-side seal or stick).
- Dose the product by weight or volume, powder, liquid, gel or viscous.
- Seal, print batch and date codes, and cut to individual sachets.
- Carton or bundle into retail units and cases.
They bring the filling line, the format tooling and, for food and health products, the compliance systems.
How to evaluate a sachet co-packer

The in-house alternative: ready-made sachets, filled by you
For lower volumes, trial launches, or products that are simple to dose, you can buy pre-made sachets or stick packs and fill them in-house with a benchtop or semi-automatic filler. This can make sense when:
- Your volume is below a co-packer’s economic MOQ.
- You want to launch fast, or test several SKUs before committing.
- Your product is a free-flowing powder or a stable liquid that is easy to dose.
- You need tight control of batch size and formulation changes.
The trade-off is labour and throughput: hand or benchtop filling is slower per unit, so there is a crossover volume where a co-packer wins. Model both before you decide, and read contract packing versus smart in-house packaging.
Getting the sachet itself right
- Barrier. Match the film to the product: foil laminate for oxygen and moisture-sensitive powders, lighter structures for wipes and low-risk contents.
- Format. Stick packs suit single servings of powder; three-side-seal sachets suit liquids and gels; tear notches and easy-open features matter for the customer.
- Recyclability. Mono-material sachets are increasingly available and align with APCO targets; check your product’s shelf life still holds.
- Print. On-sachet branding, dosing instructions and batch coding.
