“Paper tape looks flimsy” is the reflex reaction, and for the thin brown tape on a hardware-store shelf it is often fair. But the paper tape used for carton sealing in fulfilment and export is a different product, and on the measure that matters, holding a carton shut in transit, it outperforms clear plastic tape. Here is why, and where it does not.

Why the fibre bond is strong
Plastic tape sticks to the outer paper liner of a carton and stays on the surface. Water activated paper tape is different: a dispenser wets its dry starch coating, the starch flows into the porous liner and hydrogen-bonds to the cellulose fibres, and it dries rigid. The tape and the board become one piece. To break the seal you have to tear the carton surface, which is also what makes it tamper-evident.
That is why a single H-pattern strip usually seals a carton that would take two or three passes of plastic tape, and why paper tape grips recycled and dusty board that a surface adhesive slides on.
The numbers
In a controlled evaluation, cartons sealed with water activated tape failed at about 60 pounds (roughly 27 kg) of applied force, while the same cartons sealed with pressure-sensitive tape failed at about 16.8 pounds (roughly 7.6 kg). Carton-sealing productivity was about 21% higher with a WAT dispenser than a hand gun, and the average carton used about 8% less tape.
Grades and how they scale
- Non-reinforced: kraft and starch, for light single-wall cartons and mailers up to a few kilos.
- Reinforced: fibreglass yarns laminated between two kraft plies, resisting splitting. Light grades hold cartons to about 13 kg, mid grades to about 25 kg, heavy grades to about 34 kg, with a single strip.

Where paper tape is not strong
- Non-paper surfaces: poly mailers, laminated or waxed board, plastic, metal. No fibre to bond into.
- Cold and frozen: the starch adhesive does not activate or set properly.
- Wet: a damp carton surface prevents the bond.
