How packaging shapes the courier side
Dimensional weight is the big one
Couriers bill on the greater of actual weight and dimensional (cubic) weight, calculated from the parcel’s outer dimensions and a divisor set in your contract. A light order in an oversized box is charged as if it were several kilograms. Right-sizing the outer to the contents is the single largest lever on courier cost. Scan-friendly labels and surfaces
Couriers scan every parcel several times. A label that is creased, wrapped around an edge, or applied over glossy tape can fail a scan and delay the parcel. Apply the label flat on the largest face, and keep tape clear of the label and the barcode.
Seals that survive a sortation network
Courier networks put parcels through belt sorters, chutes and stacking. A carton sealed with one strip of water activated tape, which bonds into the board, holds through that better than a light wrap of plastic tape, and it tampers-evidently. For satchels, a full-width adhesive strip rather than a partial one.
Protection matched to the handling
Courier handling is rougher than a hand-carried delivery. Small fragile items belong in a padded or honeycomb mailer; heavier or higher-value goods in a double-wall carton with edge protection and paper void fill so nothing moves.
Setting up for courier dispatch
- Dedicated dispatch zone. A marked area where finished parcels are staged by courier, so pickup is fast and nothing is missed.
- Weigh and measure at the bench. A scale and, for cubic-sensitive lanes, a way to record dimensions, so the manifest matches the parcel and you are not overbilled.
- Standardised packaging. The same format range every day so couriers and staff know what to expect and cubic charges are predictable.
- Label printer on the bench. Parcels finished where they are packed.
- Fast movers near packing. Less walking between pick and pack.
- Book a regular pickup. A scheduled daily collection removes ad hoc trips and supports a same-day cut-off.
Courier or Australia Post?
Parcel post is usually cheaper for light satchels and low volume. A courier account tends to win once you regularly ship parcels over about 3 to 5 kg, have the volume to negotiate a rate, or need guaranteed next-day or same-day delivery. Do you need to outsource?
If courier dispatch is taking too much of the day, the fix is often a tighter packaging range and a proper dispatch zone rather than a fulfilment contract. Work through contract packing versus smart in-house packaging first. If you do use a third-party warehouse, you still set the packaging spec they pack and manifest to.
